A Message from our President

valentines_header.png
January is starting off with a bang!  We had an amazing Fireside Chat on the 13th.  See Judy’s write up below. We’re going to have entertaining and erudite talk about Jane Austen on the 20th.  Desiree Gillingham is hosting and speaking. The February 4th luncheon will be at Los Laureles Lodge, and we will hear from Les Terry on the history of the lodge. We will celebrate Valentine’s Day with a Brunch on Saturday morning, 02/14.

We have a new Director of Internal Communication, Cheryl Harbour.  You can read me about her here.  Here's a LINK to the announcement.  Welcome Cheryl!

We have been working diligently planning for The Hoedown.  I’m very pleased to report that we have a solid marketing plan ready to roll out.  We’re striving to reach a much bigger audience this year by using radio spots, other organization’s newsletters, postcard mailers, social media and local signage – posters, banners and H style yard signs. Hats off to Linda Smutz and her Team: Courtney Brady, Katie Read and Donna Hardy, with participation from Judy and Brenda.

Our Annual Appeal and Fundraising for the Hoedown will begin soon.  Please read the testimonials from 3 of our scholarship winners, compiled by Linda.  Your donations make a huge difference to the lives of local women and therefore, all of us, in Carmel Valley.

Fondly,

Brenda

MOST RECENT EVENT

January 20, 2026 - Jane Austen Celebration

Slideshow
2026 Jan Jane Austen

On January 20, 23 ladies gathered at Desiree Gillingham’s house to celebrate the 250th anniversary of Jane Austen’s birthday, which was December 16, 1775. Desiree gave a well-researched presentation on the author’s work, her family life and Regency Era society.  As well, we each got an ‘of-the-period’, sealed parchment envelope which opened to reveal a 3-page summary of Jane’s books and a list of all the film adaptions ranked by the expert herself.

We welcome 2 new members who joined specifically to attend this soiree:  Joan Harlem and Kay Austen, (yes, Austen!) who came with Suzanne Bohan.  I’m sure we’ll see them at other CVWC events.

Jane Consani and Joan Harlem provided tea sandwiches.  Desiree baked rosemary shortbread cookies. The Club provided sparkling Asti wine.  Rebecca Fuller decorated the center of the table with an urn of lemons. and Conne Sutherland, of course, set the table with all the goodies, strawberries and chocolates she brought and lots of flowers. And she stayed to clean up!  Thank you, ladies, for a scrumptious spread! Judy Tschirgi took the photos for this article.
